A good and basic plan done consistently will always out perform world class plans implemented occasionally. So keep it simple and be consistent. Here are 3 tips to get you started.
1. Create a vision.
Wouldn’t it be nice to know what you are going to be doing five years from now? I think so as well, but I doubt we will ever know with certainty. I do believe however that we can know what we would like to have and begin working to accomplish that goal.
I always advise people to make plans knowing that they will change, but they need to be made anyway. You will have more of what you want, then what you don’t want. Instead of worrying about the next 5 years. I suggest you focus on the next 12 months.
Ask yourself these questions.
- What words would describe how you want to feel about your finances in 12 months?
- What obstacles would you like to have removed (realistically) in the next 12 months?
- What is the single largest thing that needs to happen to make the above questions a reality?
- Then write out a plan on paper starting with the end results 12 months from now and then make steps backwards to get there.
2. Do a written budget.
It’s not sexy, but a budget will be a key factor in your vision coming true. If you need some help I have even provided a free coaching resource here on my website. Click the link below to take you there.
3. Rinse and Repeat
Spend 30 minutes a month fine tuning these top 2 principles to make changes for new information and changed desires. Again consistency is key!
4. Find an accountability partner.
I did say I would only give you 3 suggestions, but this is a good one, and I couldn’t help but putting it in here. An accountability partner is a great way to help you stay the course. A good accountability partner will regularly hold you up to the values that you proclaimed you wanted to adhere to. Make sure to find someone who believes in the same values, and has demonstrated some ability to do so themselves.
